The Afternoon

An afternoon, step by step.

Five stops, all within walking distance of the Laurel Inn. Take them in order, or let the afternoon choose.

Lunch12:00 PM

A small, hidden restaurant on Sacramento Street that feels like someone's dining room — because it nearly is. Seasonal, intimate, and quietly excellent. Book ahead; the room is small and the secret is out.

02
Walk1:30 PM

Lover's Lane & El Polín Spring

The oldest footpath in the Presidio, canopied by eucalyptus. Walk it slowly. Halfway down, you'll cross a footbridge over El Polín Spring — one of the few natural creeks still running on the surface in San Francisco. Stop on the bridge. Listen.

Sacramento Street

The boutiques here are beautifully curated, the storefronts are as lovely as what's inside. Walk the blocks between Presidio Avenue and Spruce, and simply notice good design. Sometimes the best souvenir is that.

Spruce

The bakery case at Spruce is worth a detour on its own. Pastries, cookies, and a cup of coffee in a room that feels like a very chic library. Sit at the counter and let the afternoon slow down.

State Bird Provisions

One of the most original restaurants in America. Dim sum carts deliver small plates you didn't know you wanted. The menu changes daily. Book the moment you know your dates — it sells out weeks ahead.

Why Go

Because this is the San Francisco that isn't performing for anyone.

Best Time

Morning.

Walking Time

45 min.

What You'll See

Lover's Lane's eucalyptus canopy, El Polín Spring's footbridge, Wood Line, Sacramento Street's quiet storefronts, the view from Lone Mountain.

Local Tip

Start Lover's Lane at the Presidio Boulevard gate, not the Presidio Avenue end — it's downhill the whole way, and you'll cross the footbridge instead of just glimpsing it from above.

Don't Miss

Wood Line — an Andy Goldsworthy sculpture hidden just off the main path, easy to miss unless you're already walking slowly.
