Neighborhood Quietude
The Capacity Moment™ is our real-time quietude tracker — a living indicator of how quiet San Francisco's neighborhoods are right now. It pulls live weather and time-of-day data to calculate how full or hushed each place feels at this very moment.
Each neighborhood is rated on a four-point scale: Hushed (nearly empty, deeply quiet), Quietly Open (calm and spacious), Gently Filling (comfortable but with some presence), and At Capacity (busy and lively). The pill on the right side of the screen shows the city's overall level.
We combine each neighborhood's baseline character with real-time conditions: time of day (early mornings are quieter), day of the week (weekdays are calmer than weekends), and weather (fog and rain reduce crowds significantly). The result updates live as conditions change.
San Francisco has rhythms — the same park can be hushed at 7 AM and at capacity by noon. The Capacity Moment™ reflects those shifts in real time, so you always know the best moment to visit a place. Each neighborhood page also shows its 'best time' for quiet.
Quiet corners are hand-curated spots within each neighborhood — a specific bench, a hidden alley, a secret garden. These are the places Lane returns to when she needs stillness. You'll find them listed on each neighborhood's detail page.
The levels reflect real-time conditions, which means they're most useful the day you visit. For planning ahead, each neighborhood page lists its 'best time' — the hours when it's consistently quietest, regardless of live conditions.
The Scale
Nearly empty. Deeply quiet. The city feels like it's yours alone.
Calm and spacious. A few others, but presence, not crowd.
Comfortable, with some presence. Still easy to find a corner.
Busy and lively. Best saved for another time, or another place.
